Black or Gay, Pick One

In today’s society, you will still find many people who look down upon people who are black and many people who look down upon people who aren’t straight. I guess being black and queer is really getting the best of both worlds nowadays, isn’t it? Queer African-Americans are more likely to be the victim of a hate crime or police brutality than queer Caucasians. Black transgender women experience the most violence in the community and have a higher rate of fatality from violence towards the LGBTQ+ community. Just recently, on December 7th, a transgender black woman named Kelly Stough was fatally shot at only 36 years old. It has been stated that evidence will be provided towards her gender identity being a motive for her murder. We should be concerned about this because the amount of violence in this community is on the rise. Our generation (gen z) is statistically the queerest generation with only around an estimated 66 percent of people being strictly heterosexual. With more people in our generation coming out and more violence targeted toward the LGBTQ+ community, with the highest percentages being of attacks on African-Americans we should all try and become advocates or allies. Whether it’s yourself or for someone you know, we are all impacted by this and in order to make it stop, we need to try and make a change.
